From the Ground Up: Effective verbal & hand signal training for a solid handling foundation

Effective communication is a key component in any handling system and what happens between obstacles is as important as obstacle performances. If you can’t put your dog on the line to the A-frame, then all that contact training will be for naught! Teaching “navigation” or “directional” signals to your dog is a critical foundation skill! In this course, you will build a foundation for clear, concise verbal and hand signals to communicate direction, distance, and speed to your dog on any agility course.

Course Description

From the Ground Up: Effective verbal & hand signal training for a solid handling foundation :: Diane Goodspeed

Your ability to direct your dog around an agility course – from novice to Grand Prix to International – is based on your ability to communicate direction and speed to your dog. This course focuses specifically on those communication skills. It uses simple patterns around wings, cones or natural obstacles (like trees and bushes) to build a communication pathway that your dog fully understands. Each week we’ll work on a new command using easy drills that can be done in your yard, basement, park, or in a training facility. Specifically, you will teach your dog commands for Close (move in), Out (move away), Turn Back, and Go On. Throughout the 5 weeks, you’ll be immediately using these skills on basic patterns and by the end of the course your dog will be ready for front-crosses, rear-cross, post-turns, reverse spins, or any other advanced handling move! This course has no jumps. All the exercises are on the “ground” so it is appropriate for puppies, young dogs, and dogs recovering from an injury who need light work. It is also an excellent course for handlers who have started to compete who want reinforcement for hand signals, verbal commands, or need to tighten down their dogs’ turns.
