Course Description

Stuck Starts! For Start Line Success :: Diane Goodspeed

A start line stay does not have to be a “luxury”! Join me in an intensive 4-week course to develop a “stuck” stay on the start line! This course will address all those pesky start line problems: anticipation, scooching, early breaks, or no stay at all. We’ll do lots and lots of short, easy exercises to address all these problems and get you a 1, 2 or even 3 jump lead-out!

Whether you’re working with a young dog or an advanced dog that has developed a start line problem, this course is designed for your dog to learn how to stay (think paws glued to the ground) on the start line. We’ll work the start line stay from the ground up (aka basic obedience) through all the typical issues that undermine a start line stay until we get to a stuck-like-glue stay! Using multiple, easy to do exercises each week, we’ll build a solid understanding of the stay or wait command, while breaking down any bad habits, and working out basic anticipation issues. From there, we’ll train the stay using typical distractions that occur in the agility environment. And, finally, we’ll proof the stuck stay on typical start line sequences.

Course Structure, Requirements & Equipment

Handling, Foundation, Puppy, Problem Solving

Level:

Open to All

Course Length:

4 weeks (information/classroom available in read-only mode for 6 months after completion of course)

Course Structure:

  • This 4-week course will build a solid start line stay, whether you are working with a puppy, young dog, or a dog that has developed a problem. Each week there will be multiple, simple exercises for you to complete that will build a solid foundation for a stay. There will also be drills to work on impulse control (aka anticipation issues) and drills to help your dog handle the distractions typically encountered in a trial environment. We will work through all the typical problems associated with start line stays including anticipation, scooching and early breaks. The process is easy, steady, and intended to create a solid foundation that you can count on no matter what obstacle is first or how far you need to lead out! Since equipment use is minimal, you can do this course anywhere and with young dogs or puppies (over 3 months). Working students will submit video tape for feedback and to generate discussions within the group. Video can be submitted multiple times per week or once a week.
