2 Week Techniques: Impulse Control Games :: Diane Goodspeed

Elevate your dog's impulse control with two weeks of fun, easy to play games! This short course is great for puppies of any age, youngsters working on foundation, and mature dogs who’ve developed a control problem. Ever want your dogs to patiently wait for their turn to train? It is possible! What your dog sees as a few fun games – using either treats or toys – is really lots and lots of short, easy exercises to train some serious impulse control in a very short time!

Whether you’re working with a young dog or an advanced dog that has developed an impulse control problem, this course is designed for your dog to develop some or more impulse control. We will be playing games but within each game is an exercise to teach your dog how to stay calm, learn control, and even when to pause and think (instead of just grab and go). Using multiple, fun games each week, we’ll build a solid base of impulse control, while breaking down bad habits, and working on anticipation issues.

Course Structure, Requirements & Equipment

Categories: Handling, Foundation, Puppy, Problem Solving

Level: Open to All

Course Length:

2 weeks (information/classroom available in read-only mode for 6 months after completion of course)

Course Structure:

  • This 2-week course will focus on impulse control, whether you are working with a puppy, young dog, or a dog that has developed a problem. Each week there will be several, simple games for you to play that will build up and improve your dog’s impulse control. Many of the games work directly on anticipation issues while others work on staying calm and thoughtful to help your dog handle the distractions typically encountered in a trial environment. The process is easy, steady, and intended to create a solid foundation that you can count on for control in any situation, all the way to being able to train multiple dogs who can wait for their turn! Since the only equipment needed is a toy or treat bag, you can do this course anywhere and with young dogs or puppies (over 2 months). Working students will submit video tape for feedback and to generate discussions within the group. Video can be submitted multiple times per week or once a week.
  • Discussions with other students in the class forum and the general forum.
