Course Description

Build a Master Weaver! :: Diane Goodspeed

This is 4-weeks of weaves, weaves, and more weaves! Whether you are seeking a challenge, looking to improve your dog’s weave entries, prepping for Cynosport, training for the UKI US Open, or building skills for the AKC European Open Tryouts, this weave course is for you! It is designed to build and proof weave challenges typically found in tournaments and on international style courses. Every drill set targets a specific skill to dramatically improve your dog’s weaving ability – both entries and exits!

This 4-week course focuses on challenging weave entries and exits. It is specifically intended to help handlers who want lots of independent entries and exits. The focus will be on tournament and international-style entry and exit lines. Each week the class will explore, train and proof a new skill, including tunnel-weave discriminations, “Z” entries and exits, and weaving independence including handler motion and distance. All the sequences are based on real courses from one of the 2016 European Open judges, who truly tested the agility competitors with tough weaves! Throughout the week, we will break down each skill into logical training steps so the drills can be done in short 5- or 10-minute training sessions with minimal space. Each week will be new sequence and drills to keep it fun and interesting for you and your dog! The ultimate goal is to build-up your dog’s skills and instill total confidence between you and your dog for awesome weaves!

Course Structure, Requirements & Equipment

Categories: Handling, Foundation, Puppy

Level: Puppy, Pre-Novice, Starters/Novice, Open/Advanced

Course Length:

4 weeks (information/classroom available in read-only mode for 6 months after completion of course)

Course Structure:

  • This is a 4-week course that will introduce different weave pole skills and drills each week. There is a short description of the week’s goal with a video of the skill being used on a short course, a detailed explanation of the skill being built, and then the actual drill layout and activity. Many of the drills have a progression/variation chart to challenge you and your dog! We will identify problem areas for each working team and will then focus on consistent weave pole performances using some simple challenges and tests for true proficiency! In addition to working on your dog’s understanding of weave pole performance, we will work on consistent body, hand and verbal commands from the handler.
  • In order to reduce wear-and-tear on the dog’s body and to allow the handler to do 2-3 sessions per week when training, we target specific behaviors in each exercise. You will frequently only need 6 poles. Working students can upload video once a week or for a few sessions in the week. Either way, you will find it very easy to film! In addition to course drills, I can and will post additional video and exercises for working students who run into specific issues or problems.

Equipment needed:

  • 12 weave poles (any variety or type), tunnel, dog walk (preferred but this course can be done without it), 4-5 jumps

Space needed:

  • area large enough for 3-4 obstacles (approx 45’ x 45’) for drills and access to 65’ x 65’ for the short sequences.

Office Hours:

Yes, TBD
