2 Week Techniques: Master the Backside

Instructor: Diane Goodpseed
Start Date: September 3, 2017
Registration Closed: September 17, 2017

This course is going to dive deep - for two weeks - into the backside of a jump. First, we are going to do some drills to train your dog on the backside approach to a jump so he or she knows where to go and how to jump. We will also be working on cuing the backside from a distance and from any angle. Think of the freedom of not having to foot race your dog to every backside! Second, we are going to work some short sequences to analyze the lines into and out of the backside so you finish the class with a strong understanding of which way to send your dog for the best line.

Category: Handling, Problem Solving, Skill Development

Course Description

2 Week Techniques: Master the Backside :: Diane Goodspeed

This course is going to dive deep - for two weeks - into the backside of a jump. First, we are going to do some drills to train your dog on the backside approach to a jump so he or she knows where to go and how to jump. We will also be working on cuing the backside from a distance and from any angle. Think of the freedom of not having to foot race your dog to every backside! Second, we are going to work some short sequences to analyze the lines into and out of the backside so you finish the class with a strong understanding of which way to send your dog for the best line.

This short techniques class will train and proof backside approaches for every dog and handler regardless of foundation or handling system. It’s a simple set of exercises and sequences that let you work with your cues on the concept of a backside approach and jump. Our first task will be to train the dog on backside approaches with a focus on getting distance and clarity so you don’t have to be 6 inches from the jump to get a backside. It’s not always possible to be there so your dog needs to know what you want and how to jump clean without you being there every time. Our second task will be to review some sequences that incorporate backsides to analyze which direction to choose. Backsides frequently are approachable from two directions and many handlers agonize over which way to go. We’ll review and discuss and run some interesting sets so you can determine which one works for you and your dog. It’s not a one-size-fits-all answer! Your dog’s size and skills matter so we’ll explore what works for you!
