Course Description

Face the Fear - Part 2 (Fall 2017) :: Bobbie Bhambree

More help for the fearful and reactive competition dog: continue the journey!

This is the second level of training to work towards the goal of trialing in the ring with enthusiasm and focus! The focus will be on addressing the dog’s emotional state in order to modify the dog’s behavior in the face of triggers. We will be building off the foundational tools you received and practiced in Part 1. Instructor permission can also be used to join this course if you haven’t participated in Part 1.

Addressing behavior changes how you might train your dog to play the game of agility. In this course, we will spend time increasing your dog’s threshold to stressors. What shows up in the ring is likely happening outside of the ring in real-world settings. We will explore this together while building your dog’s ability to manage those stressors and lower his anxiety. We will also start working those stressors from within the ring, using the tools you have learned from Part 1 and this course.

In this course, you will:

  • Expand the toolbox of exercises to support you in decreasing your dog’s anxiety
  • Learn to identify stress in your dog and adjust accordingly
  • Continue to build a better understanding of your dog’s triggers and how to manage thresholds
  • Continue to work on shrinking your dog’s threshold
  • Better understand and implement classical conditioning applications
  • Learn about self-control depletion and prevent the practice of it
  • Expand on how to utilize play as rehabilitation
  • Learn how to apply behavior modification in the ring

(Note: this course is designed to for dogs who are struggling with issues such as fear, anxiety and reactivity, but not aggression.)
