Course Description

Agility Toolbox: Handler Problem Solving 101 :: Chris Ott

Agility is a team sport! After you train your dog skills, it is time to train your handler skills. Does your dog incur refusals, off courses or do you have a problem with bars down because you were late with your cues? Or maybe you were in the wrong place on course and misdirected your dog? This class presents handler skill drills to help each handler be the very best they can be. Learning the exact footwork for your most used handling moves that will help you maintain your balance and give you a better chance of keeping up with your dog. Find out where to place and time your cues for better distance and turn control.

List of skill focuses:

  • Define best handler line to save the handler time and running distance
  • Methods to achieve early and consistent timing
  • Develop better obstacle commitment, independence and distance control
  • Master the basics: Front Crosses, Blind Crosses, Rear Crosses,Tandem Turns, False Turns, Reverse Spins

In this class we will present a short sequence of jumps (4-6 jumps) with a set handling plan for you to practice and present video for critique. A course map with jump coordinates and a video demo will accompany each weeks lesson showing in slow motion exactly where and how to place each cue. Student videos will be critiqued in detail with digitally marked screen captures to show exact detail when necessary.

This class is the perfect training opportunity for those who are looking for a class to focus on improving their timing, positioning as well as problem solving their handling skills. This class is designed for competition-level dogs of all ages. Young dogs can work all exercises with bars low, or on the ground.
